Welcome to the virtual Special Ed committee!

June 16, 2008

In an effort to keep people from going crazy with too many meetings, yet continue to provide timely information about special education issues on Staten Island, I have started this blog. I will post any info that comes my way which could be relevant to special ed issues on the Island. Please feel free to comment or to email me at fedsped “at” Comments will be moderated and the usual conventions of civilized discourse will apply.

Please check back regularly for more information! Thanks.

Lavelle School–UPDATE

June 16, 2008

Many of us attended a very interesting meeting with Ken Byalin, director of the proposed Lavelle Charter School. Ken has an update for us:

Dear Board members, planning team members, and friends of Lavelle Prep,

I’m delighted to tell you that Lavelle Prep has made enormous steps
toward accomplishing our goal of becoming the first Charter School in
New York State for children living with emotional and mental disorders.

To that end, I hope you will join us on Monday, June 30 to hear about
the progress we?ve made as well as the challenges, challenges we must
overcome if  the promise to Staten Island children with emotional
disorders is to be fulfilled: they can and will go to College.

In addition to hearing next steps and soliciting your thoughts, we
know we must continue to get the word out to potential parents,
teachers, community leaders and donors.  To help move this effort
forward, we have been working with Patty Kennedy of the New York
City-based marketing firm of Kennedy Spencer. To kick off discussion,
Patty will present her firm?s recommendations on positioning and
moving the communications efforts forward.

And if you haven’t seen the proposed school building in Sea View
Historic District, or if you would like to see it again, I hope you
will join us for a tour.
